Supplemental Curriculum
News For You – News For You is a weekly newspaper for adult literacy students and English-language learners. The articles are based on reports from The Associated Press and The Washington Post, and all content is reviewed by adult education professionals and editors to ensure accuracy, low-level readability, and appropriateness. Access online audio of each story in full or sentence-by-sentence, exercises, vocabulary, a crossword puzzle, a word search, and a poll. Ask OC Read staff for the website password.
The Change Agent – The Change Agent is a biannual magazine for adult literacy volunteers and learners published by the New England Literacy Resource Center (NELRC). Access downloadable back issues, audio of each story in full or sentence-by-sentence, and webinars on volunteering with The Change Agent. Ask OC Read staff for the username and password.
Journey to Success – Journey to Success is a 9-level workbook series that helps adult learners build reading, writing, vocabulary, and comprehension skills with contextualized nonfiction and fiction passages. Free teachers’ guides are available for each level.
CLLS Curriculum – CLLS has developed Roles & Goals lessons guides to support meaningful learning in California Library Literacy Services that correspond to the Roles and Goals framework. Scroll down to the bottom of this page on libraryliteracy.org to view current curriculum content.
Gemma Open Doors for Literacy Readers – The Gemma Open Doors books are stories written specifically for adult literacy learners. Each story tells an intriguing tale and helps learners build their reading comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking skills. Reading guides with lesson activities, and online audio recordings are available for select tiles. See individual titles for free resources.
Monthly Reports
Monthly reports for the One-on-One program can be located by logging in to the tutor portal at americalearns.net/ocread. Monthly reports open on the 20th and close on the final day of the month.
Monthly reports for the Walk-in program can be completed after every volunteer shift or by the end of the month. Monthly reports are submitted through a form. The link is regularly emailed to Walk-in volunteers.
Additional Training Opportunites
All OC Read volunteers are asked to complete four hours of additional training time during the calendar year. For a list of options, please see the Additional Training Opportunities page. Other training opportunities will be emailed to tutors as they arise.
